FRS Finland, a subsidiary of Germany's FRS, has been awarded a public tender for a 15-year contract to provide ferry services in the Porvoo archipelago, east of Helsinki. The agreement involves deploying a new, fully electric, and emissions-free vessel on the Kalkkiranta–Bodö–Pörtö route. Pörtö, an island approximately ten kilometers from the mainland, will be connected year-round, with the electric ferry operating during the ice-free months.
This initiative highlights a growing trend towards sustainable maritime transport solutions, particularly for short-sea and island connections. The vessel, a CAT 16 type, will be constructed by Callboats in Vaasa, Finland, and will have a capacity for up to 58 passengers.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, while this specific route is primarily for passenger transport and local cargo, it signifies a broader shift in the maritime sector towards electrification and decarbonization. Such developments could influence future regulations and infrastructure investments in port charging capabilities, potentially impacting vessel turnaround times and operational costs for larger cargo vessels in the long term. It also demonstrates a commitment to green logistics, which might become a factor in supply chain partner selection.
