From July 1st, the Netherlands will introduce a new kilometer-based truck toll, making every driven kilometer more expensive for transport operators. This new levy comes at a time when diesel prices continue to climb and the industry faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices. Although the initial toll rates will be temporarily lowered, the cumulative financial strain on transport companies is anticipated to be significant.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development means an inevitable increase in road freight costs for shipments moving through or within the Netherlands. Carriers will likely pass these additional expenses on to their clients, impacting overall logistics budgets. Forwarders should prepare to adjust their pricing models and communicate these changes to shippers. The added cost could also influence routing decisions, potentially favoring alternative transport modes or routes to mitigate the impact where feasible.
