The Dutch government has announced that it will discontinue compensation schemes for employers regarding severance payments. As of January 1, 2027, companies will no longer receive government compensation for severance paid out when an employee is dismissed due to long-term disability. Additionally, the compensation scheme for business termination resulting from the employer's retirement or death will also be abolished. This decision was communicated in an amendment to a legislative proposal submitted to the House of Representatives.
This change could significantly impact freight forwarders and other logistics companies in the Netherlands. The elimination of these compensation schemes means that employers will bear the full cost of severance payments in these specific circumstances. This could lead to increased operational costs and financial pressure, particularly for smaller and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the transport sector. Companies will need to adjust their financial planning and human resources strategies to account for these upcoming changes, potentially affecting their competitiveness and ability to manage workforce transitions.
