The Air Cargo Advisory Body (ACAB), established by the British International Freight Association (BIFA) in 2025, recently organized a workshop dedicated to Unit Load Device (ULD) handling at London Heathrow Airport (LHR). This event facilitated discussions among key players in the air cargo community, including freight forwarders, airlines, ground handlers, and airport authorities.
The primary objective was to address current challenges and explore potential improvements in landside infrastructure and operational efficiency related to ULD management. Effective ULD handling is crucial for the smooth flow of air cargo, impacting turnaround times and overall supply chain reliability.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, enhancements in ULD handling at a major hub like Heathrow could translate into faster cargo processing, reduced dwell times, and potentially improved schedule reliability for air freight shipments. More efficient landside operations can mitigate delays and optimize the use of valuable airport space, ultimately benefiting the entire air cargo supply chain. This initiative signals a collaborative effort to streamline a critical aspect of air cargo logistics at one of Europe's busiest airports.
