Finnish heavy transport company Vuorsola recently completed the complex movement of a 300-tonne liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank across a 31-kilometer route in Finland. This intricate operation involved the use of specialized Cometto transporters and required extensive preparatory work, including significant modifications to the road infrastructure, adjustments to overhead power lines, and temporary closures of highways in the vicinity of the Port of Kaskinen.
Such oversized cargo movements are highly specialized, demanding meticulous planning and coordination with local authorities and infrastructure providers. The scale of the tank, weighing 300 tonnes, classifies it as heavy-lift cargo, necessitating specific equipment and route surveys to ensure safe passage.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this highlights the complexities and lead times associated with project cargo and oversized shipments. Such movements often involve substantial costs for route preparation, permits, and escorts, which must be factored into project budgets and timelines. Capacity for such specialized transport is also limited, requiring early booking and detailed planning. The need for road modifications and power line adjustments underscores that inland legs for mega-modules can be as challenging, if not more so, than the ocean or rail portions of a journey.
Vuorsola has indicated that another similar transport operation is scheduled to take place soon, suggesting ongoing demand for large-scale industrial component logistics in the region.
