The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) recently published a safety alert, Marine Safety Alert 02-24, after concluding an investigation into a marine casualty. The incident involved a recreational vessel that was overwhelmed and overturned by the wake generated by a commercial towing vessel. The USCG's findings indicated that both the credentialed Master of the towing vessel and the operator of the recreational vessel shared responsibility for the event.
The investigation revealed that the towing vessel's master failed to operate at a safe speed, considering the proximity of smaller vessels and the potential impact of their wake. Simultaneously, the recreational vessel's operator did not maintain a proper lookout or operate their boat at a safe speed, which could have allowed them to avoid the hazardous wake.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safe navigation and adherence to maritime regulations for all commercial vessels, including tugs and towing vessels. While this specific incident involved a recreational craft, similar situations could lead to damage to other commercial vessels, barges, or port infrastructure, causing delays and potential cargo claims. Ensuring that carriers and their crews are compliant with safe operating procedures is essential for maintaining schedule reliability and preventing costly disruptions. This also underscores the need for clear communication and awareness among all maritime traffic to prevent accidents.
