Soya Group has announced the creation of FLOW Maritime, a new company dedicated to facilitating the maritime industry's shift towards sustainable fuels and reduced emissions. According to Daniel Gent, the newly appointed Managing Director, FLOW Maritime will focus on developing comprehensive business cases for decarbonization, moving beyond narrow financial assessments.
The new entity will provide an integrated commercial model designed to help clients maximize the value derived from their lower-carbon operations. This includes managing portfolios of alternative fuels, ensuring certified chain of custody, facilitating FuelEU pooling, and handling environmental attributes. The initiative comes as shipping companies face increasing pressure to comply with environmental regulations and reduce their carbon footprint.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signals a growing focus within the shipping industry on sustainable practices. As more carriers adopt alternative fuels and decarbonization strategies, it could lead to changes in vessel availability, routing, and potentially, the introduction of green surcharges or differentiated pricing for environmentally friendly services. Forwarders may need to adapt their procurement strategies to account for these evolving carrier offerings and regulatory compliance requirements, such as those related to FuelEU Maritime.
