Singapore's total marine fuel sales, including alternative fuels, reached 4,726,400 metric tonnes (mt) in September. This volume marks a 1% decrease compared to the 4,771,900 mt sold in September of the previous year. Additionally, September's sales were marginally lower than the 4,772,700 mt recorded in August, according to data released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
Specifically, sales of very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) saw a 5.7% year-on-year reduction, falling from 2,353,100 mt to 2,218,100 mt. High sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) sales, after exceeding 2 million mt in August, also experienced a decline.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, a decrease in bunker sales in a major bunkering hub like Singapore could indicate a slight reduction in vessel traffic or a shift in bunkering patterns. While a 1% dip is not drastic, sustained declines could potentially influence bunker availability or pricing dynamics in the long term, though immediate impacts on rates or capacity are unlikely from this single data point. Monitoring these trends is crucial for understanding operational costs and potential supply chain adjustments.
