The emergency lane on the older Suurhoff Bridge will continue to be accessible for freight traffic heading to and from the Maasvlakte area. This decision comes after recent inspections confirmed that the bridge can safely handle reduced structural loading. The Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) is currently preparing the newer Suurhoff Bridge to accommodate two-way traffic in the future.
This measure is critical for maintaining uninterrupted access to the Port of Rotterdam, a vital European logistics hub. The Suurhoff Bridge serves as a key artery for road transport, connecting the industrial and port areas of Maasvlakte to the wider road network.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, the continued availability of the emergency lane on the old bridge is a positive development. It ensures that road access to the Maasvlakte remains stable, preventing potential bottlenecks or delays that could impact shipment schedules and delivery times. The eventual transition to two-way traffic on the newer bridge is expected to provide a more robust and efficient long-term solution for this crucial corridor.
