Heathrow Airport (LHR) has announced that the opening of its third runway is now anticipated to occur closer to 2039, rather than the earlier target of 2035. This represents a further extension to the project timeline, following an initial indication earlier in the year that the runway's completion might take longer than initially expected. The update was provided in the airport's first-quarter 2025 results, published on April 30, 2025.
For freight forwarders and air cargo operations managers, this delay signifies continued capacity constraints at one of Europe's busiest air cargo hubs for an extended period. The additional runway was intended to significantly increase slot availability and overall cargo handling capacity, which would have potentially eased congestion and improved schedule reliability. The prolonged wait means that existing pressures on air cargo space and potentially higher operational costs associated with limited slots at LHR will persist for several more years. Forwarders may need to continue exploring alternative gateways or multimodal solutions to manage cargo flows to and from the UK, especially for time-sensitive or high-value goods.
