Viracopos Airport (VCP) is undergoing a major expansion of its air cargo facilities to cater to the escalating demand for cross-border e-commerce in Brazil. The airport has added approximately 20,000 square meters of dedicated logistics warehouse space and implemented measures to segregate e-commerce shipments from general cargo. This strategic growth follows a substantial 32.5% increase in express imports between 2021 and the first half of 2026.
This surge in e-commerce volumes has been further amplified by the removal of federal taxes on qualifying shipments under US$50 in May, making international online purchases more attractive to Brazilian consumers. The airport's initiatives aim to enhance operational efficiency and accelerate the processing of these high-volume, time-sensitive shipments.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this expansion at Viracopos signifies improved capacity and potentially faster transit times for air cargo entering Brazil, particularly for e-commerce goods. The dedicated e-commerce facilities and streamlined customs processes could lead to more predictable delivery schedules and reduced dwell times, which is crucial for managing customer expectations in the fast-paced e-commerce sector. Forwarders should monitor the impact on customs clearance efficiency and potential changes in service offerings from integrators and airlines utilizing VCP.
