Stillstrom, an initiative by Maersk, has entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Semco Maritime for the production and supply of the Local Equipment Room (LER) for its innovative offshore power and charging system. This LER is considered the 'nerve center' of the entire setup, as it is responsible for overseeing power distribution, communication links, and safety protocols across the charging infrastructure. All system components are connected through and governed by this unit.
The LER houses essential equipment such as transformers and medium voltage switchgear, which facilitate the transfer of electricity generated by offshore wind farms directly to vessels. Additionally, it integrates communication systems, ventilation, and fire safety mechanisms to ensure reliable and secure operations. This development is part of a broader trend towards decarbonizing maritime operations by enabling vessels to power down their engines while at anchor and charge from renewable sources.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this signifies a step towards greener shipping practices, potentially impacting vessel turnaround times and operational costs in the long run. As more vessels adopt offshore charging, it could influence port stay durations and energy consumption patterns, contributing to supply chain sustainability goals. This also highlights Maersk's continued investment in green technologies, which may lead to new service offerings or requirements for carriers and their partners.
