Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been fully acquired by PIA Equity Ltd, a subsidiary of the Arif Habib Consortium, for approximately US$645 million. This acquisition marks the end of decades of government ownership for the national carrier.
The new private owners intend to inject substantial capital into the airline. Key strategic initiatives include modernizing the fleet, expanding the route network, and implementing comprehensive operational restructuring. A significant focus of these efforts is expected to be on leveraging PIA's belly cargo capacity, which has historically been underutilized despite Pakistan's potential as a cargo hub.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this privatization could signal a positive shift in air cargo capacity and service levels from Pakistan. Increased investment in fleet and network expansion may lead to more direct routes, improved schedule reliability, and potentially greater cargo space availability for shipments to and from Pakistan. Forwarders should monitor PIA's restructuring plans for new service offerings or enhanced cargo capabilities that could impact routing and transit times.
