The Merwedebrug, located on the A27 highway near Gorinchem, Netherlands, was reopened to traffic late Saturday evening, earlier than initially projected. Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, reported that the maintenance work progressed smoothly, allowing for the expedited reopening. The bridge was originally slated to remain closed until Monday morning.
During the closure, the existing asphalt layer was replaced with a thinner and lighter material. Despite the completion of these repairs and the early reopening, the prohibition on heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) crossing the bridge remains in effect. This ongoing restriction means that freight forwarders and logistics operators must continue to plan alternative routes for truck shipments that would typically use this section of the A27.
