Jan De Nul has successfully completed a significant nine-month coastal engineering project in Itapoá, Brazil. The initiative involved deepening the access channel to the local port, a crucial step for improving maritime traffic and accommodating larger vessels. The sand excavated during the dredging process was then repurposed for environmental restoration and coastal protection, creating nine kilometers of new beaches and five kilometers of dunes, which were subsequently planted with native vegetation.
This project highlights a circular economy approach, where material extracted for one purpose (port access) is utilized for another beneficial outcome (coastal resilience and tourism). The Mayor of Itapoá, Jefinho Garcia, noted that the project has brought national recognition to the city.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the deepening of the port's access channel in Itapoá means improved navigability and potentially greater vessel capacity for cargo movements to and from the port.
