The Netherlands incurred an estimated economic loss of €9.2 billion due to reduced productivity during recent summer heatwaves. This figure positions the country among the top five European economies most severely impacted by extreme heat, according to the Allianz Climate Economics Report 2026. The report indicates that heatwaves across 30 European countries collectively resulted in substantial economic setbacks.
For freight forwarders and logistics operations, such climate-related economic disruptions can indirectly affect cargo volumes and demand. Reduced economic output may lead to decreased manufacturing, consumption, and trade, potentially impacting freight rates and available capacity. Supply chains may also face direct operational challenges during extreme heat, such as restrictions on road transport, reduced port efficiency, or increased energy costs for temperature-controlled logistics.
