Global container shipping schedule reliability experienced a significant decline in August, marking the third consecutive monthly decrease. On-time performance fell by four percentage points to 29%, effectively erasing the recovery observed since February. This figure represents the second-worst schedule reliability recorded in the past 12 months, with average vessel delays increasing by nearly a full day to 5.1 days.
The Far East to Europe trade lane was particularly affected, with on-time arrivals plummeting to a mere 6%. This level of disruption has not been seen since the peak of the pandemic in late 2021. Contributing factors include ongoing Red Sea crisis diversions around the Cape of Good Hope, which extend transit times, increased port congestion in North Europe, and extreme weather events. Specifically, a series of four typhoons in China led to approximately 1.1 million TEU being held at anchorage in major ports like Ningbo, Shanghai, and Yantian, causing significant downstream impacts.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this sustained deterioration in schedule reliability means increased uncertainty in shipment planning and delivery timelines. The extended average delays and the severe on-time performance on critical trade lanes like Far East to Europe will necessitate greater buffer times, potential rerouting considerations, and proactive communication with shippers regarding revised ETAs. The impact of the Chinese typhoons will continue to ripple through global trade, affecting berth arrival delays in both European and North American ports for weeks to come. This situation will likely put pressure on capacity and could lead to further rate volatility, especially as carriers struggle to maintain schedules.
Ten out of the top twelve carriers saw declines in August, with six carriers—Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM, PIL, HMM, Wan Hai, and Yang Ming—reaching 12-month lows in their on-time performance. Despite significant drops in reliability, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd managed to keep the severity of their delays relatively stable, averaging 2.8 days.
