Wind propulsion specialist Norsepower, in collaboration with Wuchang Shipyard, has finished installing the first of six Rotor Sails on LD Armateurs' (LDA) RoRo vessel, the Spirit of Toulouse. All six sails are slated for installation at the Wuchang Shipyard in Shanghai before the vessel undergoes sea trials. The ship is also equipped with dual-fuel engines, allowing it to run on e-methanol, bio-methanol, or marine diesel oil. Two additional sister vessels within the LDA fleet are also scheduled to receive Norsepower Rotor Sails, with all three ships chartered for use by Airbus.
This initiative reflects a broader industry movement towards decarbonization and the adoption of hybrid propulsion systems. The integration of Rotor Sails, which harness wind energy, alongside methanol-capable engines, represents a significant step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport.

The remaining Rotor Sails will be installed at the Wuchang Shipyard, followed by sea trials for the Spirit of Toulouse. The two sister vessels will also undergo similar retrofits, further expanding the fleet of wind-assisted, methanol-ready vessels.
