ClassNK has published Edition 3.1 of its ‘Guidelines for Liquefied Hydrogen Carriers’, incorporating the ‘Revised Interim Recommendations for Carriage of Liquefied Hydrogen in Bulk’ recently adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2026. This update aims to provide comprehensive safety requirements and best practices for the design, construction, and operation of vessels transporting liquefied hydrogen.
The revised guidelines specifically address critical aspects such as the selection of appropriate materials and welding procedures for hydrogen containment systems and associated equipment. This is vital given the unique properties of liquefied hydrogen, including its extremely low temperature and high flammability, which necessitate stringent safety protocols.
