Collett & Sons recently completed the delivery of a 131-tonne shunt reactor to National Grid's facility in Trawsfynydd, Wales. This intricate logistical undertaking involved a unique approach: landing the oversized cargo directly on Black Rock Sands beach. The decision to use a marine-to-road transfer at the beach was made to overcome significant constraints posed by inland road networks, which would have been impassable for such a heavy and large component.
The operation integrated multiple specialized logistics disciplines, including marine transport for the initial leg, abnormal load road transport from the beach, and precise heavy-lift installation at the final destination. This method highlights the innovative solutions often required for project cargo movements when standard routes are unfeasible.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this case demonstrates the importance of multimodal planning and the potential necessity of unconventional routing for oversized and heavy-lift cargo. It underscores that traditional inland routes are not always viable, especially in regions with restrictive infrastructure, necessitating creative solutions like beach landings. Such projects require extensive pre-planning, specialized equipment, and coordination across various transport modes and regulatory bodies.
This successful delivery showcases Collett & Sons' capability in managing complex project cargo logistics, particularly for critical energy infrastructure components.
