China has introduced the GSTC Green Marine Fuel Certification System, a new initiative designed to verify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of domestically produced e-methanol. This system is intended to lay the groundwork for future recognition by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
According to GL Consulting, a Shanghai-based energy specialist, this certification framework is tailored to China's specific industrial conditions while also aligning with international benchmarks. The move comes as previous global sustainability standards, such as ISCC-EU, have not adequately integrated China's methods for producing e-methanol, particularly those involving industrial carbon capture combined with green hydrogen.
