The latest weekly vessel valuation report shows that sales and purchase (S&P) values for bulkers generally held steady across the market. However, Handy resale prices experienced a downward trend, influenced by softer pricing observed for specific vessels like the Sider Bellezza.
In a notable transaction, two Capesize vessels, the Houheng 5 and Houheng 6, each with a deadweight tonnage of 262,000 DWT and built in February and September 2017 respectively by Guangzhou Shipyard International, were sold. The undisclosed buyer acquired both ships for a combined total of USD 144 million. The report noted that the vessels' valuation was USD 151.28 million, indicating a sale slightly below the assessed value.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, stable bulker values generally suggest a consistent underlying demand for dry bulk commodities, which can indirectly influence overall shipping capacity and rates for certain cargo types. The slight dip in Handy resale values might indicate some softening in the smaller bulker segment, potentially leading to more competitive charter rates for Handysize vessels in the near future. This could offer some cost advantages for shippers moving smaller volumes of dry bulk or project cargo that can utilize these vessel types. Monitoring these trends is crucial for forecasting capacity and pricing in the dry bulk sector.
