Babcock LGE, a marine engineering firm, has unveiled ecoAPEX (Advanced Performance Extraction), a new reliquefaction architecture. This system is specifically designed to optimize energy usage aboard vessels that transport fuels, such as LPG and ammonia carriers. The core issue ecoAPEX seeks to resolve is the inherent energy inefficiency on dual-fuel gas carriers, where energy is expended to cool boil-off gas back into liquid form, while simultaneously, fuel is heated to meet engine temperature requirements.
The ecoAPEX system aims to consolidate these two conflicting energy demands, allowing vessels to recover more value from their onboard energy resources. According to Babcock LGE, this innovation can significantly improve reliquefaction efficiency, particularly for LPG and ammonia carriers operating under design conditions.
