Hitachi, MOL, and Japan Airlines (JAL) have announced the commencement of Japan's inaugural Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) pilot project. This initiative, situated on Kume Island, will focus on evaluating technology designed to extract carbon dioxide directly from seawater. The primary objective is to advance domestic carbon removal capabilities and explore the potential for utilizing the captured carbon in the production of future sustainable aviation fuels (ESAF).
This project is a collaborative effort between a technology giant, a major shipping line, and a leading airline, highlighting a cross-industry commitment to addressing climate change through innovative solutions. Direct Ocean Capture is a nascent but promising technology that could offer a scalable method for CO2 removal, complementing land-based carbon capture efforts.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this pilot project, while not immediately impacting operations, signals a long-term trend towards decarbonization across the supply chain. Successful development of such technologies could eventually lead to more widespread availability of sustainable fuels, potentially influencing fuel surcharges and carrier choices in the future as the industry strives for net-zero emissions.
