The Port of HaminaKotka, Finland's largest port, has announced a collaboration with technology firm ABB to develop and install a shore power system at its Mussalo port facility. This project is a direct response to forthcoming European Union regulations that will require container and passenger ships exceeding 5,000 gross tonnage to connect to onshore power supply or employ other emission-free technologies when docked at EU ports, starting January 1, 2030.
This proactive step by the Port of HaminaKotka aims to ensure compliance well in advance of the regulatory deadline. The port successfully applied for and received over €3 million in EU funding through the CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) program to support this significant investment in sustainable port infrastructure.
