Global air cargo demand experienced a significant 9% year-on-year increase in June 2026, as reported by DHL. This surge represents the strongest monthly growth recorded so far this year, contributing to an overall 5% growth for the first half of 2026. Despite this robust demand, global air cargo capacity remained largely unchanged.
However, specific trade lanes observed notable shifts in capacity. Freighter capacity dedicated to the crucial China-Europe route decreased by 12%. Similarly, the Middle East and Africa region saw its air cargo capacity fall by 4% compared to the previous year. These regional capacity contractions, juxtaposed with rising overall demand, suggest potential tightening in certain markets.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this data indicates a strengthening air cargo market, particularly in terms of demand. The significant drop in China-Europe freighter capacity, alongside stable global capacity, could lead to increased rates and reduced flexibility on this key trade lane. Shippers might face challenges in securing space and could experience higher costs for urgent shipments. Forwarders should monitor capacity closely, especially for routes involving China, the Middle East, and Africa, and advise clients on potential rate volatility and longer lead times.
