Chinese shipbuilder Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE) has initiated the construction of two new 20,000-cbm LNG bunker vessels. These vessels are being built for GSX Energy and represent the third and fourth ships in their order series. Each vessel will be powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel main engines and will incorporate 1,300-kilowatt (kW) shaft generators, designed to produce onboard electricity using the propeller shaft's rotation.
This expansion of the LNG bunker vessel fleet underscores the increasing adoption of liquefied natural gas as a marine fuel, driven by environmental regulations and the shipping industry's decarbonization efforts. The use of dual-fuel engines and shaft generators aims to improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the expansion of LNG bunkering capacity signifies a growing infrastructure for vessels powered by alternative fuels.
