Ardmore Shipping Corporation has announced the exercise of options for two more 40,500 dwt Handysize product and chemical tankers to be constructed at Wuhu Shipyard. This decision increases their total order with the shipyard to six vessels, all under similar contractual terms. The company has confirmed that no further options remain outstanding after this exercise.
These new vessels are scheduled for delivery in phases, with two expected in the second half of 2026, two more in the first half of 2027, and the final two in the second half of 2027. This strategic fleet expansion aims to enhance Ardmore's capacity in the product and chemical tanker segments.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this fleet expansion signals a potential increase in available capacity for the transport of refined petroleum products and various chemicals. While the immediate impact on spot rates may not be significant, the additional vessels entering service over the next few years could contribute to a more stable supply of tanker capacity, particularly in the Handysize segment. This could offer more flexibility in routing and potentially more competitive long-term contract options for shippers dealing with these types of commodities.
