Venture Energy, the clean fuels division of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport, recently announced its participation in Hong Kong's most substantial single green methanol bunkering operation to date. The initiative involved the bunkering barge Da Qing 268 supplying 1,000 tonnes of green methanol to the CM Shenzhen, a RoRo vessel operated by China Merchants Guangzhou RoRo Shipping Co. This collaborative effort included Sinopec (Hong Kong) and utilized green methanol sourced from Shanghai Shenji Energy & Environmental Technology Co., a subsidiary of Shenergy Group.
This development signifies a growing trend towards alternative fuels in the maritime sector, particularly in key bunkering hubs. For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the increasing availability and adoption of green methanol in major ports like Hong Kong could lead to more sustainable shipping options for their clients. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity is likely minimal, it contributes to the long-term decarbonization goals of the industry, potentially influencing future vessel choices and supply chain strategies. Forwarders should monitor such developments as they may impact compliance requirements and customer demand for greener transport solutions.
