VAROPreem has successfully completed the acquisition of a 100% stake in Sunpine, a leading biorefinery specializing in raw tall oil. The facility, located in Piteå, Sweden, is recognized as the world's largest of its kind, with an annual production capacity of 400,000 tonnes. This operation focuses on generating renewable feedstock essential for the production of advanced biofuels, including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Following the acquisition, Sunpine will be rebranded as VAROPreem Sunpine.
This strategic move supports VAROPreem's overarching "twin-engine" strategy, which aims to supply both conventional and sustainable energy solutions to its diverse clientele across mobility and industrial sectors. The integration of Sunpine's capabilities is expected to significantly enhance VAROPreem's capacity to meet the growing demand for renewable energy products.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this acquisition signals a potential increase in the availability of sustainable fuels, particularly SAF, which could impact supply chains for air cargo carriers committed to decarbonization. The enhanced production of HVO also supports road and sea transport sectors seeking lower-emission fuel options. This development may lead to more stable pricing and improved access to these alternative fuels in the European market, influencing routing and carrier choices for environmentally conscious shippers.
