Unibarge Sustainable Bunkering B.V. has successfully obtained the ISCC Biomarine Fuel Operator certification, making it one of only three companies in the Netherlands to achieve this new standard. Additionally, the company secured certifications for Trader with Storage and Proof of Compliance Trader. The ISCC introduced the Biomarine Fuel Operator scope in January to facilitate the use of specific raw materials as direct final fuels within the maritime sector. Permitted raw materials under this scope include used cooking oil, residue from fatty acid methyl ester end distillation, and crude glycerin.
This certification is significant for freight forwarders and shippers as it signals a growing availability of certified sustainable marine fuels. Increased access to such fuels can support decarbonization efforts and help meet evolving environmental regulations. For operations managers, this means more options for compliant bunkering, potentially impacting vessel routing and carrier selection based on fuel availability and sustainability targets. The expansion of certified biomarine fuel operators contributes to the broader industry shift towards greener shipping practices, which may influence future freight rates and supply chain strategies.
