Marine consultancy Brookes Bell has issued a warning regarding bulk carriers transporting elemental sulphur that are currently stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. These vessels are reportedly anchored for periods more than three times longer than the standard duration for cargo protection, leading to an accelerated risk of structural corrosion.
This situation poses significant challenges for freight forwarders and shippers. Prolonged delays and potential vessel damage can result in substantial cargo claims, increased insurance costs, and disruptions to supply chains. Forwarders should anticipate potential delays for shipments originating from or transiting through this region, and advise clients on the heightened risk of cargo degradation and vessel integrity issues.
Brookes Bell's Director of Non-Destructive Testing, Arron Jackaman, has specifically urged shipowners and P&I clubs to address these mounting risks, highlighting the need for urgent intervention to mitigate further damage and financial liabilities.
