Simms Showers LLP recently announced the expansion of its maritime legal team with the addition of two new lawyers, Tom Brown and Joshua Keyser. Tom Brown rejoins the firm after serving as Senior Counsel within the Aviation and Admiralty Section of the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ). His background includes managing significant vessel collisions, aviation incidents, government contracts, cargo losses, charter party disputes, shipboard fires, heavy-lift claims, shipyard claims, and environmental litigation, alongside personal injury and wrongful death cases. Brown was also recently promoted to Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve, Office of the Judge Advocate General, indicating his deep understanding of government legal procedures.
This expansion signifies the firm's commitment to enhancing its capabilities in maritime and admiralty law. For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development suggests that legal expertise in areas such as cargo claims, charter disputes, and environmental liabilities remains a critical component of the shipping ecosystem. The addition of lawyers with such specialized experience can influence how complex legal issues are navigated, potentially affecting the resolution speed and outcomes of disputes involving vessel incidents or cargo damage. While not directly impacting rates or capacity, the availability of robust legal support is an underlying factor in managing operational risks and contractual obligations in global logistics.
