CM Technologies (CMT) has completed a fleet-wide rollout of its integrated onboard fuel and lubricant testing and analysis kits to approximately 300 containerships and bulk carriers. This initiative was undertaken by a prominent independent German ship management company, whose name was not disclosed. The implementation has been gradual over the last decade, establishing a unified testing platform across the entire fleet.
The primary objective of this widespread adoption is to enable consistent monitoring of fuel and lubricating oil quality. By performing these tests onboard, ship managers can proactively identify potential issues with fuel contamination or lubricant degradation, which can lead to engine damage or reduced operational efficiency. This approach is part of a broader strategy by ship managers to reduce operating costs by optimizing maintenance schedules and preventing costly breakdowns.
For freight forwarders and their shipper clients, this development signifies a push towards greater vessel reliability and potentially fewer unexpected delays due to engine issues. Consistent fuel and lube quality management can contribute to more predictable sailing schedules and reduced risks of cargo disruptions. Improved maintenance practices also support the longevity of vessels, indirectly impacting overall fleet capacity and service levels.
