Mental Health Support Solutions (MHSS), part of the OneCare Group, has identified a significant gap in the maritime sector: the absence of standardized psychological support for seafarers. This observation comes after MHSS completed a specialized online masterclass designed to equip mental health professionals with the necessary knowledge to assist those working at sea. While international regulations and guidelines have substantially improved physical health and safety protocols within the industry, mental health provisions have not kept pace.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the well-being of seafarers directly impacts vessel operations, schedule reliability, and ultimately, the smooth flow of cargo. A lack of adequate mental health support can contribute to crew fatigue, stress, and potential errors, leading to delays or incidents. This situation underscores the importance of advocating for and implementing robust mental health programs to ensure a stable and efficient supply chain. Addressing this issue could lead to improved crew retention and operational safety, indirectly benefiting shipping costs and transit times.
