Italian intermodal operator Hannibal is set to introduce a new open-rail shuttle service. This new connection will run between Rail Hub Milano, located in Melzo, Italy, and Rotterdam Europoort in the Netherlands.
This development provides an additional intermodal option for freight moving between Northern and Southern Europe. The route connects a major industrial and logistics center in Italy with one of Europe's largest ports, known for its extensive onward connections.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this new rail shuttle represents an expanded capacity option for cargo moving between Italy and the Benelux region, as well as for onward sea connections from Rotterdam. It could offer a more predictable and potentially more sustainable alternative to road transport, helping to mitigate road congestion and reduce carbon emissions. The 'open-rail' nature suggests flexibility for various types of cargo, which could be beneficial for diverse supply chain needs. This service might also contribute to improved schedule reliability for inter-European freight movements.
