Auckland-based EV Maritime has been awarded a contract by Australian shipbuilder Echo Marine Group to serve as the electric propulsion systems integrator for a fleet of five 25-meter battery-electric fast ferries. These vessels are being constructed for the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) and will operate as part of the METRONET on Swan Ferry Service Expansion, which represents the largest expansion of Perth's ferry network to date. Echo Marine Group previously secured the A$66 million contract for the design and construction of this new fleet, with One2three Naval Architects also contributing to the project team. EV Maritime's involvement in this Perth initiative leverages its prior experience with the initial two "EVM200" 24-meter electric passenger ferries.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, while this news directly concerns passenger transport, it signals a broader shift towards electrification in the maritime sector. Increased adoption of electric vessels, even in ferry services, can drive innovation in battery technology, charging infrastructure, and potentially influence future port developments to support green shipping. This trend could eventually impact the availability and cost of alternative fuels and propulsion systems for cargo vessels, as well as the regulatory landscape for emissions in coastal and inland waterways. It also reflects a growing commitment to sustainability within the Australian maritime industry.
