The Port of Dunkirk has officially started the construction phase for its second container terminal. This significant infrastructure project, valued at €303 million ($346 million), is designed to more than double the port's current container handling capabilities. The Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque has awarded the contract for the quay's civil engineering works to a joint venture, with Spie Batignolles at the helm. The scope of the project includes the construction of a 1,000-meter deepwater quay.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this expansion signifies a future increase in container capacity at a key European gateway. Enhanced capacity at Dunkirk could lead to improved schedule reliability, potentially offering more direct service options or reducing port congestion in the wider region. This development may also influence routing decisions for shippers looking for alternative entry points into the European market, potentially impacting rates and transit times on certain trade lanes.
