Chinese gas carrier owner CYH Shipping has reportedly committed to an order for four Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) at Jiangnan Shipyard, with an additional option for two more vessels. Each of these ships will have a capacity of 90,000 cubic meters. The firm orders are expected to be delivered in 2030.
This order reflects ongoing investment in the gas shipping sector, particularly for large-capacity carriers. While no pricing details were disclosed, such newbuild contracts indicate a long-term outlook on the demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) transport.
For freight forwarders and supply chain analysts, this development signals a future increase in VLGC capacity. While the delivery is several years away, it contributes to the overall fleet growth trajectory. This could influence long-term freight rate stability and vessel availability for gas shipments, potentially easing capacity constraints in the future. Forwarders involved in petrochemical or energy logistics should monitor such fleet expansions as they may impact future chartering options and pricing for large-volume gas movements.
