Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor is preparing to open a new container terminal this year, which will effectively serve as the first ocean-served container facility for Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States. Located in Portage, Indiana, approximately 20 miles from Chicago, this terminal will be the sole all-water container gateway connecting the Greater Chicago market directly to the Great Lakes.
This initiative is significant as it offers an alternative to traditional routing through East Coast or Gulf Coast ports, which often involves extensive inland transportation. By providing direct access to ocean vessels, the new terminal could streamline logistics for shippers in the Midwest.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development could introduce new routing options, potentially reducing transit times and costs for cargo destined for or originating from the Chicago region. It may also alleviate some pressure on congested coastal ports and inland rail networks, offering a more direct and efficient supply chain for certain types of cargo. Forwarders should evaluate the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of utilizing this new gateway for their clients, considering vessel schedules and feeder service availability.
The terminal's opening is anticipated later this year, marking a notable shift in regional logistics infrastructure.
