Akij Resource, a prominent group from Bangladesh, has commissioned the construction of four ultramax bulk carriers. The order was placed with Nantong Xiangyu Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering in China for vessels each with a deadweight tonnage of 63,800 dwt. This development signifies Akij Resource's initial foray into the newbuilding sector.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, an increase in the global bulk carrier fleet, particularly ultramax vessels, could eventually contribute to greater capacity in the dry bulk segment. While no immediate impact on rates is expected, a larger fleet over time may lead to more competitive pricing for bulk commodities, affecting shipping costs for relevant cargo types.
