Antwerp North, recognized as Europe's second-largest rail freight marshalling yard, is scheduled to receive a substantial upgrade to its control and automation systems. Infrabel, Belgium's national railway infrastructure manager, has awarded the contract for this significant modernization project. The initiative aims to enhance the operational efficiency and overall capacity of this vital rail hub.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this upgrade is expected to bring several benefits. Improved automation typically leads to greater reliability in train movements and shunting operations, reducing delays and increasing throughput. This could translate into more predictable transit times for cargo utilizing rail services to and from the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, a major European gateway. Enhanced capacity will also support the growing demand for intermodal transport, particularly as rail freight continues to be promoted as a sustainable alternative to road transport.
