Construction has officially started on the first of five electric ferries destined for the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. This development is a key component of the METRONET Swan River Ferry Service Expansion program, an initiative aimed at modernizing and expanding public transport infrastructure in the region. The vessels are being built by Echo Marine Group, a shipbuilder based in Henderson, near Perth, as part of a AUD 107 million project.
Each new electric ferry will have the capacity to carry up to 100 passengers and achieve a maximum operating speed of 25 knots. The design emphasizes efficiency and environmental sustainability, aligning with broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions in public transportation.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, while this project directly impacts passenger transport, it signals a growing trend towards electrification in maritime sectors. This shift could influence future port infrastructure developments, potentially leading to increased demand for shore power facilities and green energy bunkering options, which might indirectly affect vessel turnaround times or operational costs for cargo ships in the long term. The investment in local shipbuilding also highlights regional economic activity that could support ancillary logistics services.
