Varamar, a logistics provider headquartered in Antwerp, has announced the acquisition of four 5,200 deadweight tonnage (dwt) multipurpose vessels. This strategic move represents the company's initial investment in an owned fleet, departing from its previous operational model. The newly acquired vessels are described as modern, box-shaped, tweendeck, and gearless, designed for transporting breakbulk, dry bulk, and oversized cargo.
These vessels are scheduled to commence service with Varamar's D-type fleet between the end of 2026 and early 2027. The addition of these ships is expected to enhance Varamar's operational control and capacity in the specialized breakbulk and project cargo sectors.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signifies a potential increase in available capacity for breakbulk and project cargo shipments, particularly from a carrier that previously relied solely on chartered vessels. Having an owned fleet can lead to greater schedule reliability and potentially more competitive long-term contract options for specialized cargo. It also indicates Varamar's commitment to expanding its market presence and service offerings in the heavy-lift and project logistics segments.
