Seaspan Corporation has announced the delivery of the *Glovis Lighthouse*, the first vessel in its new series of pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs). This vessel, with a capacity of 10,800 car equivalent units (CEU), is equipped with dual-fuel LNG propulsion, representing a move towards lower emissions in the automotive shipping sector. The *Glovis Lighthouse* was developed in collaboration with Hyundai Glovis and has already commenced its maiden voyage.
Key features of the new PCTC include 14 decks, with four liftable decks and hoistable ramp systems. These design elements are intended to improve cargo flexibility and maximize capacity, which in turn helps to reduce the emissions intensity per vehicle transported. Furthermore, the vessel is designed to be ready for future conversion to methanol and ammonia fuels, indicating a long-term commitment to decarbonization.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the introduction of such advanced PCTCs can lead to more reliable and environmentally compliant shipping options for automotive cargo. The increased cargo flexibility may also translate into more efficient space utilization and potentially better scheduling. The dual-fuel capability and future-proofing for alternative fuels could help shippers meet their own sustainability targets, while the larger capacity might contribute to stable rates and availability on key automotive trade lanes.
