Sallaum Lines, a prominent car carrier owner, has placed an order with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry for two firm and two optional Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs), each with a capacity of 8,600 CEU (Car Equivalent Units). This significant acquisition represents the largest vessels in the company's history and is part of its ongoing fleet expansion strategy. The newbuilds are designed with multi-fuel capabilities, allowing them to operate on LNG, VLSFO, and MGO, reflecting a commitment to operational flexibility and environmental compliance.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signals an increase in available capacity within the specialized automotive shipping sector. Larger, more efficient vessels can potentially lead to greater schedule reliability and possibly stabilize or reduce freight rates for vehicle transport in the long term, although immediate impacts may vary. The tri-fuel design also highlights a trend towards more sustainable shipping, which could influence carrier selection for forwarders with green supply chain mandates.
