The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC), in collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), organized a five-day Capacity Building Senior Officers’ Meeting (CBSOM) in Manila from June 22 to 26, 2026. The event brought together senior officers from maritime law enforcement and regulatory agencies representing 15 ReCAAP Focal Points, including Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, and Japan. The primary objective of this meeting was to enhance regional cooperation and build capabilities in combating piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asian waters.
This initiative underscores the ongoing commitment to maritime security in a region frequently affected by such incidents. By fostering closer ties and improving information exchange among member states, ReCAAP ISC aims to create a more coordinated and effective response mechanism against threats to shipping.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, enhanced regional cooperation against piracy directly translates to improved safety for vessels and cargo transiting these waters. A reduction in piracy incidents can lead to lower insurance premiums (war risk premiums), fewer delays due to security concerns, and more reliable shipping schedules. This proactive approach by maritime authorities helps mitigate operational risks and costs associated with navigating high-risk areas.
The meeting's outcomes are expected to lead to more streamlined procedures for reporting and responding to incidents, ultimately contributing to a safer maritime environment for international trade.
