Pingtan Minghui Shipping, a Chinese company previously focused on bulk carriers, has announced its entry into the tanker market. The Fujian-based firm has placed an order for two LR2 product carriers with Taizhou JianXing Heavy Industry. These 114,000 dwt vessels will be built through Pingtan Minghui's subsidiaries, Tianjin Minhui Shipping and Tianjin Afera Shipping.
This expansion represents a significant strategic shift for Pingtan Minghui, moving beyond its traditional dry bulk operations into the liquid bulk segment. The LR2 product carrier class is typically used for transporting refined petroleum products over long distances.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this development signals a future increase in available capacity for product tankers. While the vessels are still under construction, their eventual deployment could contribute to market dynamics for refined oil product transportation, potentially impacting freight rates and offering more options for routing and scheduling in the long term. This diversification by a prominent Chinese owner also highlights ongoing investment and fleet modernization within the global shipping industry.
