Pacific International Lines (PIL) recently held a naming ceremony for two new 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels, the Kota Elok and Kota Elan, at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. These vessels are the first of a thirteen-ship series designed to modernize PIL's fleet and boost its presence on key trade routes.
The new ships are slated for deployment on PIL's service connecting Asia with South America. This expansion is intended to address increasing trade demand and provide greater efficiency and capacity for the carrier's customers.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the introduction of these larger, more fuel-efficient vessels on the Asia-South America route signifies a potential increase in capacity and improved schedule reliability. The use of LNG dual-fuel technology also aligns with growing sustainability mandates, which could be a factor for shippers prioritizing greener logistics options. While immediate rate impacts are unlikely, the added capacity could contribute to more stable pricing in the long term on this specific trade lane.
