San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has indicated that the first runway of the New Manila International Airport (NMIA) project might be operational earlier than its original 2028 target. This development comes despite challenges, including shortages of fill sand, which have impacted certain construction phases.
The fill sand scarcity is attributed to competing reclamation projects within Manila Bay, diverting essential resources. However, SMC remains optimistic about the overall progress, particularly for the airport's logistics center, which is still slated for completion by the end of 2026.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, an earlier operational runway at NMIA could provide a significant boost to air cargo capacity in the Philippines. This might alleviate some pressure on existing Manila airports, potentially leading to improved slot availability and more direct routing options for airfreight. The timely delivery of the logistics center by late 2026 is also crucial, as it will provide essential infrastructure for cargo handling and distribution, enhancing efficiency for shippers and forwarders operating in the region. While initial delays were noted, the revised outlook suggests a positive trajectory for regional air cargo infrastructure.
